his modesty, his character, his compassion, his work ethic, and his
dedication to his music and goal of being a great guitar player, what
I remember most about my brother Ernie is that he was a born leader.

Ernie once
told me a story, about how at the age of 11 he joined Boy Scouts
Troop 7. It was an all Black troop and Ernie was the new kid joining
them.

After a
scout meeting, when it came to a friendly game of football, Ernie was
asked what position he played. He answered, “I'm a
quarterback”. After throwing a few long completed passes, that
same person came up and said to him with wide open eyes, “Oh, you
ARE a quarterback!”

That's how
Ernie lived his life. He was a natural born leader. He was always a
quarterback in the longest game he ever played.

Then one
day, dad invited Ernie to a Santa Barbara Dons football game. After
that fateful day, football became one of Ernie's passions. At a very
young age he played Boy's Club football with the older kids. He
played baseball as a catcher with the older kids, and I remember he
ran track in the summer invitational meets at La Playa Stadium. It
wasn't long until his dresser was covered with all the trophies and
ribbons he had won.

Ernie saw
sports as an adventure. And from playing sports he learned the
values of hard work and playing as a team. From that time on, that's
how Ernie lived his life. For Ernie, life was an adventure, and he
loved the challenges of the unknown. Ernie was a
leader. He was adventuresome, fearless, bold, and eager to explore.
He knew no boundaries, and he taught Cory and I, his brothers, these
same traits and values.

And sports
wasn't the only thing Dad taught Ernie. Dad played guitar in his own
band and mom sang with him. At the age of 10 Ernie got his first
guitar. Then came Elvis. Ernie was inspired, and he did his first
show in front of Brownies Market, the neighborhood “mom and pop”
store. It was his best friend Bobby Brown who coaxed the shy Ernie
into singing “Hound Dog” at the entrance of the store.

Being the
organizer he was, Ernie, still only 10, recruited his
brothers and friends to form a band. Our first paying gig was playing
on State Street during Old Spanish Days Fiesta. We set up and
played in front of a used furniture store. The owner of the store
put out a big tip jar and it filled up fast. We thought, “Wow, this
is great”.

As fate
would have it, at Santa Barbara Jr. High, Ernie met two of the best
musical prodigies that ever came out of Santa Barbara. It was
drummer Randy Busby and guitar player extraordinaire, Ray Estrada,
who later became know as the group War's “The Cisco Kid”. We all
shared the same dream. We influenced each other as we discovered and
shared the magic of Rock and Roll. It was an exciting time and a new
era for everyone.

It wasn't
long before we played dances as Ernie & the Emperors. Ernie set
the pace, we kept working hard, and doors kept opening. We
eventually got signed with the majors. We did college tours with
Wolfman Jack, and played everywhere. We were signed by Reprise Records and released "Meet Me At The Corner", a 45 that received lots of airplay.

The
Vietnam War changed everything. Brother Cory was in the Marines. I
was in school, and Big Brother Ernie Joseph went out on the road on
his own. Ernie re-located to Atlanta and became part of the regional
Southern Rock scene. He ventured on his own without us, but later
we were re-united to join him, and we kept working hard
as Ernie continued to set the pace.

Fast
forward to the present year. Ernie got sick and we canceled all our
shows. Our last
performance was at Grapes and Hops on Main Street in Ventura on
September 24th
of this year.

Ernie was a
true leader and he was a team player who shared his dream with as
many people and close friends as he could.

Our parents
taught us the value and importance of family. Ernie lived his life
treating others as family. He was a good listener with a big heart, and he was everybody's big brother. That's who he was and that's
how he will be remembered. As “Big Brother Ernie Joseph”, a big
brother to all who knew him.

In
retrospect, I'm not the only one who lost a brother. Ernie gave so
much of himself to his music and to all his friends and family. He
will be missed.

Let us
celebrate the memory of his life as we all knew and loved him.

Brian Faith

KEYT article

Kaye Wallerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06491607694389685973noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6153606915464682749.post-70382814919174050792019-02-16T12:12:00.001-08:002019-02-16T12:12:13.778-08:00Valentine's Celebration

After a four year battle with cancer, Cory passed on Wednesday November 8, 2017 in Santa Barbara at the same hospital where he was born.

In his youth growing up in Santa Barbara, Cory excelled in sports as a football quarterback /defensive back, team leader. He also led his baseball team to a Little League World Series as a pitcher.

As a well-established and beloved musician, condolences came from our local music community, and from musicians who knew Cory from his travels across the country, including the East Coast and Atlanta where he performed and lived for five years.

After touring extensively with brothers Ernie and Brian, Cory returned to Santa Barbara where he and brother Ernie reached out to serve the local music community as music producers and recording engineers. Their SRS Recording Studio helped many local musicians realize their dream of recording their music. As a record producer, Cory has the distinction of being the first to record local talent Katy Perry. Other clients included Jewel as she was doing her first demo recording at SRS Studios as an unknown artist.

Cory, along with brothers Ernie and Brian, was a founding member of Santa Barbara musical pioneers, Ernie and The Emperors. With their song “Meet Me At The Corner,” the band was the first in Santa Barbara to record on a major label, Warner Bros./Reprise Records.

Numerous recording projects followed as a member of Giant Crab, Big Brother Ernie Joseph, and Brian Faith Band.

A CD release in 2012 was his most recent work as part of the Lillimar Pictures documentary soundtrack, “Makin’ It – The Story of the Brian Faith Band,” produced by award winning filmmakers John Ferry and Grace DeSoto Ferry.

Cory dedicated his life to sharing his music. He will also be remembered for directly helping other musicians with his musical talent, record producing skills, encouragement and inspiration.

Another favorite pastime of Cory’s was dabbling in electronic instrument repair and restoring musical instruments.

Cory also enjoyed the company of his pet cat “Sunshine” who he often photographed, bringing Cory much peace and solace.

One of Cory’s proud accomplishments was in serving his country as a U. S. Marine.

Cory’s last, and only musical performance since his battle with cancer, was for SBHS class of ’66 50th Reunion, where he was among friends who knew and loved him.

The family wishes to thank Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, City of Hope (Dr.Jasmine Zain), the Ridley-Tree Cancer Center (Dr.Neetu Sekhon), and Cathy Swain for their quality care and love.
One of the beautiful things of having the pleasure and honor of knowing Ernie through the years is what he has unwittingly taught me about life. I know he'll sort of cringe inside when he reads this and, although he'll probably not think it's true, he'll accept it in his usual humble and gracious fashion. But it is true. Probably his greatest strength is his willingness to go along with change and ride it through, having faith that all things work toward a greater good. From the early Emperors to today's Brian Faith Band, Ernie's career has been one of constant change--band name changes, member changes, repertoire changes--you name it. It hasn't always been easy to keep up, but Ernie is a strong and gentle man who instinctively understands it's music that always eases us along through life's changes. And that's what he's never failed to give us. Music.

This leads me to call your attention to the changes in this blog. Initially, I felt forced to make them, by Blogger, who has created an all-new platform with some confusing early bugs, but over the weekend I made the changes gladly. There are a couple of little issues I'm having to sort out and that Blogger and Google will eventually have to address. I've used Chrome since its inception, but in it there are some features that just don't show up.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you came here via Facebook, PLEASE click the "Home" link to see the blog's full look. The page you are on now is this entry's static page!

The sharing buttons are gone at the bottom of each post. They've been replaced by one "Share" button that opens a pretty cool drop down menu of social media choices. The problem is, this doesn't appear in Chrome.

The sidebar icon links to Ernie's various social pages don't show up in Chrome, either.

As a result, I'm forced to go back to Firefox until these bugs are worked out.

You will notice that there seems to be no sidebar for Ernie's gigs calendar, links and etc. This is an easy thing, though. Just click the three horizontal lines (what web pros call a "hamburger") to the right of the Search link at the top right of the page. The sidebar will magically appear. To make it go away, click the arrow. Easy!

Overall, I like the clean, new look, but I'll be customizing it in the days and weeks to come. In the meantime, if you run into any other issues, you can let me know by using the Contact link.

Thanks for your patience!
Kaye

P.S. This photo of Ernie has nothing at all to do with this post, I just thought it was awesome!

If you were at Santa Ynez High School sometime between 1964 and 1969, you’ll remember what an exciting time it was musically. There was the Royal Dolphin Club on Oak Street, where bands from all over the county played while we girls danced in our minis-dresses and go-go boots with boys wearing their powder blue cords and madras shirts. When the Dolphin closed its doors, the Barn in Santa Ynez opened theirs and, somewhere in there, we also danced at The Soaring Sun and all of the school dances. It seemed a live band played somewhere every weekend—and we were there!

In 1965 a band of four good looking guys in matching suits and dog collars performed at the Dolphin Club and took us by storm. That band was Ernie and The Emperors (the core of which was the three Orosco brothers, Ernie, Cory, and Brian) and they hooked us with their Reprise Records 45 “Meet Me At The Corner.” Do you remember going to Bob’s Appliances to buy your records? The Emperors’ single hit the Top 5 not only in that shop, but also on all of the county’s radio stations. When they had a night off of their job as the house band at Earl Warren Showgrounds, they played all over the state and went on to make some pretty impressive tours as Big Brother Ernie Joseph, sharing the stage with the Allman Brothers, Bruce Springsteen, Roy Orbison, the Strawberry Alarm Clock, and many others. Their albums, including the iconic collectible, Confusion, are still selling, some fetching upwards of $300 per copy.

When they returned to Santa Barbara, they opened a recording studio where through the years they worked with such luminaries as members of Ambrosia, the Doobie Brothers, the Grass Roots, The Drifters, Herman’s Hermits, Missing Persons, the Marshall Tucker Band, Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf, Toto, Vanilla Fudge, Tower of Power, and Canned Heat, as well as Katy Perry and Chaka Kahn. And the list goes on.

In 2012 Lillimar Pictures made a documentary on the band, Makin’ It, in which filmmaker John Ferry follows the musical careers of the Orosco brothers from when they sang for snacks at the market in their childhood State Street neighborhood, to today. In Makin’ It, Ferry caught the essence of what made Ernie, Cory, and Brian so popular with their audiences, and what has kept them popular all these years. Focusing on their dedication to music and to each other, Ferry delivers an intimate look into their lives and hearts. And heart has always been what sets them apart from other bands.

In more recent years the group has been performing under the name of The Brian Faith Band and, speaking as one of their original appreciators from the Dolphin Club, I’ll vouch for them. The years have been good to them. Their sound still is fresh and they still put on a good show. The dance floor is seldom empty once they get going! From Ernie’s prowess on lead guitar, Brian’s amazing voice, and Cory’s mastery of any instrument he picks up, this band just plain rocks. But don’t think you’ll hear merely a great cover band. Just as they did in the 1960s and ‘70s, they have a huge catalog of catchy original songs, too. The band has been through a number of incarnations through the years so they’re more than qualified to please any audience, from those of us who love to experience a little nostalgia to those who enjoy taking in new bands. Whatever you want to hear, these guys will deliver, and they’ll do so with the magic they showed us back in the Sixties when they first thrilled us with their uplifting sound and their unique showmanship.

On Friday night, January 6, you’ll have the opportunity to see them when they perform at The Maverick Saloon (the old Barn where they used to perform in the Sixties) in Santa Ynez. If you’re an alumnus of Santa Ynez High School (or even if you're not!) you won’t want to miss this event!Kaye Wallerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06491607694389685973noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6153606915464682749.post-15830803753384764312016-12-09T22:37:00.000-08:002016-12-09T22:38:04.351-08:00Ernie Joseph Will Rock Your New Year's Eve!

Gary James of Classic Bands.com has just published a wonderful interview with Ernie. In it, they discuss Ernie's friendships with Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Ronnie Van Zandt, Ed King, and a number of other music greats as well as the early beginnings and the popularity of Ernie and The Emperors. Most interesting is how it was Frank Sinatra who "discovered" the young, teenage band and signed them to his label, Reprise Records.
"He (Morrison) wasn't flamboyant. He wasn't ostentatious. He was a very down to earth guy. It surprised me. He was kind of vulnerable in my eyes." Ernie
